Christmas Position Words Activity Book is a free download!
I don’t know about you, but I notice that my EL/ESL kindergarten students really struggle with position words. These words can easily be “lost in translation”. After kinesthetically practicing position words through the fall, I decided to whip up this easy reader so that my students could practice positional words and reading at the same time.
What better way to engage them than with a story about Santa and a chimney?
We start by reviewing vocabulary. As we go over each word, we use hand motions and/or give examples that show we know what the word means. I give colored chips to my students since we are still practicing tracking text. It also lets me easily “see” who is on task and who isn’t. 😉 [Click here for the affiliate link to the colored chips in case you want to order some for your students.]
For this activity, I have students help me pull out just the red and green chips. #befestive
Before we read each line, we “find” the position word and highlight it with a yellow crayon. This helps “set them up for success” because they review the word before they go back and read it in the sentence.
We also talk about how the picture shows Santa in the various “positions”.
After reading it together a few times, students read it with partners.
Finally, they get to color it and take it home. I make sure to let them know that they should “teach it” and read it to their parents. They love it!
