Differentiation
ALL students (levels A-E) can read and learn about the SAME topic, but at their own level. You will have all the texts you need right at your fingertips!
Passage Types
For each theme, there is one fiction passage and one nonfiction passage. (Can you say “common core?!”)
October Themes
For each theme there is 1 fiction passage, 1 nonfiction passage, each in 5 levels for a total of 10 passages per theme.
October themes are:
- Bats
- Fire Safety
- Pumpkins
- Owls
- Halloween
There are a total of 50 passages for the month!
Levels Included
Each fiction passage and nonfiction passages comes in FIVE levels: A, B, C, D, and E.
- About Formatting: Please note that Levels A-D are in a portrait format, while Level E is in landscape. This is done to ensure large text size for early readers.
About the Fiction Passages
- Fluency – Students are encouraged to read the passage three times to build fluency. Students color a “happy face” at the bottom of the page each time they read. Students read the passage three times before completing the comprehension component.
- Comprehension – Each passage includes TWO reading comprehension questions and/or activities. Some questions are multiple choice while others are free response (depending on the level).
- Student-friendly graphics – Each passage includes appropriate graphics (clip art).
About the Nonfiction Passages
- Vocabulary – There are vocabulary words at the top of each passage. These are excellent for front-loading vocabulary for ESL/ELL students.
- Fluency – Students are encouraged to read the passage three times to build fluency. Students color a “happy face” at the bottom of the page each time they read. Students read the passage three times before completing the comprehension component.
- Comprehension – Each passage includes TWO reading comprehension questions and/or activities. Some questions are multiple choice while others are free response (depending on the level).
- Photographs – Each passage includes one corresponding photograph. Photographs are in full color but are easily and clearly printed in grayscale.
