When I was pregnant with my daughter last year, I started to stockpile baby books. I had a ton of picture books from my teaching days, but I didnāt have many board books. I went on an Amazon shopping spree (or three?) and have enjoyed reading to my daughter every day since she was born.
I’m really excited to share my favorite books for babies! If you havenāt started reading to your baby yet, itās never too late to start! I encourage you to order a book or two and start reading to your baby today.
The Best Books for Babies
In just five short months, my daughter already loves books! If I put one in front of her, she smiles!
(Here she is exploring one of her favorite high-contrast picture books when she was 4 months old!)
Now that she is a little bit older, I put her on my lap with her back to my tummy and open a book. She loves to touch, feel, and look as I read to her. Sheās even starting to try to āturn the pagesā (AKA, grab the book from my hands š).
The books Iām recommending arenāt necessarily the ones I love to read to my baby the most. That could (and will) be a whole other post! #alittlebitbookobsessed
The books I am sharing today are my daughter’s favorite books. They are the ones my baby loves to hold, grab, chew, eat, and love on. She canāt read yet, but if her love of reading starts with loving to hold onto and play with books – Iām ok with that.
Iāve talked to my sister (who is also a teacher) and a few of my close teacher friends about their favorite baby books, and found that our babies have a lot of favorite books in common!

Look, Look!
Did you know that newborns only see in black, white and gray? They slowly start to see colors (starting with red) and finally see all of colors when they are five months old. In the beginning, if you show your baby high contrast images, you will see them stare intensely!
This adorable book has simple, high contrast pictures that “mirror” each other on each two page spread. For example, one page has a black background with a white flower, and the opposite page has a white background with a black flower.

Although babies are too young to understand why this book is silly, they love to feel the book! It has silicone touches on each page to match the rhyming story. This book is perfect for babies who are at the age where they can reach for and touch everything!!

We donāt have this book, but my nephew does and both babies love it! I love that you can easily attach it to the car seat or play gym by the attached plastic hook. The high contrast pages and the crinkly sound they make will keep your baby entranced!

This book teaches so many concepts – body parts vocabulary, hide-and-seek, motor skills…My daughter isnāt old enough to lift the flaps on her own (yet), but I can imagine she will love this book even more when she can! For now, it’s almost like a game of peek-a-boo for her!

Jimmy Fallon wrote the famous Dada book, but of course I want her first word to be Mama.? The Dada version is very simple…it literally says āDadaā on every page. Well this book is different – itās so surprisingly heartfelt that I teared up at the end. My daughter and nephew love the repetitive nature of this book – it always makes them giggle!

This Usborne book is an absolute FAVORITE at our house. It’s honestly one of the cutest touch-and-feel books I have ever seen. As soon as I turn the page, my daughter reaches out to feel the new page with her hands. I love putting it in front of her for tummy time because I know she will be engaged as she tries to feel the pages. There’s a whole series of these That’s Not My... books and you can’t go wrong with any of them!

I love seeing babyās reaction at the end when thereās a āmirrorā surprise!

I stumbled across this book when I wanted to buy my nephew a book to ācelebrateā him starting solids. I saw that it said āIndesctructibleā but I honestly just thought the pictures and words were cute.
Little did I know this would become his most favorite book. He takes it everywhere with him.
It slightly hurts our teacher hearts to see him bang and crumple this book around, but if thatās how he ālovesā it, so be it! I bought my daughter this one and this one and they are both adorable (and indestructible), too!

Iām not going to lie, this isnāt the most riveting book. In fact, the teacher-creator in me canāt stand the font they used for the text inside. ?
However, my daughter loves to grab and crinkle this book! She loves feeling all the tags, and sometimes, she tastes them too.
This is the perfect “Here, hold this while I change your diaper!” book because I know that it wonāt hurt her if she drops it on her head. You donāt need this exact book – Iām sure babies would love any of these soft books with tags.

I love that I can sing this book to my daughter! It just makes her that much more into it. Sometimes I play the song (by Raffi) on Spotify and we follow along with the book.
I also love the fact that I know in the future she will be able to āreadā this book by singing the song.

Lovevery Soft Book
I purchased the Lovevery Play Gym and Play Kits (best investments ever) and received this soft book in the 3-4 month (The Charmer) play kit. Itās tactile and interactive, the pages crinkle, it’s easy to stuff in the diaper bag, and both my daughter and nephew love playing with it.
I love that you can change out the pictures to be more complex, and that it includes a mirror, too. Thatās my daughterās favorite page!
